In a move that has drawn immediate backlash from local leadership in Forsyth County, Georgia lawmaker Rep. David Clark proposed a resolution to rename Sawnee Mountain to "Trump Mountain." As reported by FOX 5 Atlanta, Clark's social media announcement praised former President Donald Trump as "one of the most transformative Presidents in the nation’s history." The mountain, which currently bears the name of a respected Native American chief, could potentially bear the name of the 45th president if Clark's resolution gains traction.
According to a FOX 5 Atlanta report, Forsyth County officials have been quick to express their opposition. The county's manager issued a statement emphasizing the community's dedication to preserve rather than to abruptly erase the historical importance of the Sawnee name. "Forsyth County leadership was not included in any discussions regarding this resolution from Rep. Clark and would have opposed the motion had it been presented," the statement read. It continued to assert the county's stance in "preserving the legacy of the Cherokee tribe with the Sawnee name for the mountain range."
Clark's controversial proposal, as mentioned on CBS News Atlanta, was aimed at honoring what he termed Trump's "historic legacy of Making America Great Again." The Buford-based Republican representative, who is currently pursuing the lieutenant governor seat in Georgia, further labeled Trump as "one of the most transformative presidents in our nation's history."
Amidst the tension, Forsyth County Manager David McKee made the county's position clear. "Following State Rep. Clark's resolution to rename Sawnee Mountain, Forsyth County remains committed to the historical importance of the Sawnee name in our community and as the official name for one of our community's most impactful natural resources," McKee told CBS News Atlanta.
