At the recent Texas Veterans of Foreign Wars Mid-Winter conference, Governor Greg Abbott took the podium to praise and pledge continued support for the state's military veterans. In a move that aligns with his gubernatorial track record, Abbott made clear his staunch commitment to veterans within the Lone Star State, stating, "We wouldn't be America today without those willing to fight and defend our freedom and our country across the entire globe," as reported by the Office of the Texas Governor. Reinforcing the message that these individuals will not be forgotten, Abbott affirmed, "As long as I'm your Governor, you have a Governor who has the back of Texas veterans."
The event was a gathering of esteemed company, with VFW State Commander Dave Walden, VFW Officer of the Day Willie Keller, and VFW State Chaplain Jim Russell counted among Abbott's audience, alongside other veterans and advocates. Abbott expressed gratitude to Texas's military personnel, highlighting that the state serves as the backbone of America's military might, home to 1.7 million veterans, and active military members.
One noteworthy initiative cited by Governor Abbott was the signing of House Joint Resolution 133, which eliminates franchise tax for veteran-owned businesses, turning a temporary provision into a lasting policy. Such legislative actions are aimed at easing the transition from military to civilian life for veterans, signaling Texas's dedication to those who have served.
Additionally, in a measure seeing beyond immediate financial benefits, Abbott shed light on a $50 million designation for ibogaine clinical trials, a novel approach that could potentially revolutionize treatment for veterans.
