The City of Grand Prairie has unveiled a new way for residents to start the spring with a flourish. Through their latest effort to promote recycling, your old Christmas trees could be getting a second life in local gardens. Introduced in the first installment of their "How It’s Made GP" video series, the city showcased the journey of live Christmas trees from festive holiday decor to useful mulch available free of charge to the community.
According to the City of Grand Prairie's initiative, once the season's cheer has faded, these trees are gathered and transported to the Grand Prairie Landfill to be ground down into mulch. In an effort to foster a greener city, they're giving away this byproduct to Grand Prairie residents, perfect for beautifying flowerbeds or for laying down in garden projects.
For those interested in getting their hands dirty, free mulch can be picked up on the residential side of the Grand Prairie Landfill, which neighbors the service station at the front of the site. Locals are encouraged to bring shovels and containers of any size to take as much mulch as they require. The city mandates no hard limit on quantity, ensuring that gardeners can plan without concern for resource scarcity. To acquire the mulch, residents need to present proof of residency—either a Grand Prairie driver's license or a City of Grand Prairie water bill will suffice.
The Grand Prairie Landfill is located at 1102 MacArthur Blvd., and is open Monday through Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., though they close at 3 p.m. on the last Thursday of each month. Besides mulch, the landfill also serves as a drop-off point for all curbside recyclables and brush. Tree limbs that are under 10 inches in diameter and 5 feet in length can also be recycled into mulch.
