Traffic roared overhead on Thursday morning while, below the tangle of I-10 and U.S. 59, Houston police opened a death investigation after a body was discovered near the Nance Street underpass. Crews and investigators moved into the area in the midmorning hours as vehicles continued to roll by above. Authorities have not released the person’s name or an official cause of death.
According to ABC13, the Houston Police Department said officers were dispatched at 11:12 a.m. to the 2699 Nance Street area after a TxDOT contractor found the body and reported it to police. HPD told ABC13 that investigators are looking into whether the death could be weather-related as temperatures dropped across the region. The department is calling it an active death investigation and has not provided additional details.
How This Fits A Worrying Local Pattern
The discovery comes as Houston continues to grapple with a run of recent body recoveries from waterways and underpasses, a grim pattern that has not gone unnoticed. Earlier this month, the Houston Chronicle reported on a body pulled from Buffalo Bayou and noted that dozens of bodies have been recovered from local bayous in recent years. City crews and TxDOT have also cleared encampments beneath U.S. 59 near Nance and Rothwell as part of ongoing efforts to remove unauthorized camps along bayou corridors, a push that has stirred debate over homelessness policy and public safety.
What Investigators Are Doing
HPD says the case is being handled as a death investigation and has not released any identifying information about the person found. The agency told ABC13 that detectives are examining whether the recent cold weather played a role while they continue to collect evidence and interviews. Officials say more information will be made public as it becomes available.
How To Report Tips
Anyone with information about the case is urged to contact the Houston Police Department. HPD news releases list the Homicide Division and the Office of Community Affairs as points of contact and direct tipsters to Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS. The department is asking anyone who may have video or eyewitness information from the Nance Street area around the time of the discovery to come forward.
