Closing time at a family food stand in Waikiki turned terrifying last night when, police say, a 31-year-old woman was robbed at gunpoint from behind. The suspect reportedly aimed a black handgun with a red laser at her and demanded cash. She handed over a black fanny pack containing money and was not physically injured. The robber then took off toward the Ala Wai harbor, leaving nearby vendors shaken as detectives began canvassing the area.
According to KITV, the holdup happened around 8 p.m. near Holomoana Street and Kahanamoku Street. Police described the suspect as a Caucasian man in a ski mask, gray hoodie, and baggy blue jeans. Authorities have not publicly released witness statements or surveillance images, and there were no immediate arrests after the incident. Detectives say they are working leads in the area and want anyone with video or information to get in touch.
Police Seek Tips
The Honolulu Police Department is asking anyone with information to call 911 or CrimeStoppers at (808) 955-8300, or to report tips at any police station, according to the department (Honolulu Police Department). HPD’s public information pages outline how to submit anonymous tips through CrimeStoppers and regularly share wanted notices when investigators need community help. Officers have also reminded nearby businesses to secure cash and double-check closing procedures while the investigation continues.
Other Recent Incidents in Waikiki
The robbery comes as police respond to other incidents in Waikiki that have prompted appeals for help and added patrols. Earlier this month, officers asked for the public’s assistance after a suspect walked into a Waikiki restaurant and demanded that staff open a safe, as reported by Hawaii News Now. Vendors in the area say they have tightened up their evening routines in response to the recent cases.
