Atlanta's theater season is gearing up for a dynamic blend of history, humor, and heartfelt narratives as "Hamilton" returns to anchor the Broadway in Atlanta 2026/2027 lineup. The revolutionary musical, celebrated for its blend of hip-hop and historical storytelling, is set for a run from September 2 to 20 at the iconic Fox Theatre. In anticipation of its return, an inspired event named "HamJam" is slated for February 28 at the Gas South Convention Center, offering a day-long celebration of the musical's influence on culture, Fox5 Atlanta reported.
While "HamJam" may not be officially linked to "Hamilton," the excitement captures a glimpse of how the musical continues to resonate with fans. Equally stirring performances are expected in the upcoming season, featuring the likes of "Mrs. Doubtfire," a musical comedy rooted in familial bonds. "Boop, the Musical," based on the iconic Betty Boop character, will also join the slate, promising a blend of classic charm with modern flair. According to WSBTV, Russ Belin, the vice president of Broadway in Atlanta, described the lineup as "a bold next chapter for Broadway in Atlanta,” underscoring the creative forces shaping the seasons ahead.
Adding to this rich tapestry of storytelling, the season will also include adaptations of beloved stories like "The Notebook" and "Water for Elephants," each drawing audiences into tales of enduring love and the capacity for new beginnings. As with every story brought to life on stage, the theatrical renditions of these popular novels will craft their narratives through song, performance, and the immersive magic that live theatre offers. Six local premieres will punctuate a season characterized as much by its variety as its vivacity.
Notably, this season's eclectic offerings venture beyond the standard repertoire. The Cuban sounds of "Buena Vista Social Club" will heat up the theatre, and "Operation Mincemeat," the unlikely, hilariously true espionage tale from WWII, has secured a spot after garnering acclaim in London's West End. Each production is an invitation to step outside of the everyday, into worlds crafted by award-winning directors and choreographers. "We're honored to continue growing the series alongside audiences who show up with curiosity and passion year after year," Belin told WSBTV.
Cirque du Soleil's "'TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE…" and perennial favorites like "Wicked" are set to add to the thematic diversity, while the inclusion of "The Bodyguard" and "Beetlejuice" on the seasonal options list offers a reversal of roles, with cinematic narratives revisited in a new light on stage. Whether it's the pulsing beats of a bodyguard's protection or the zany antics of a mischievous ghost, the Broadway in Atlanta season is shaping up to be an arena where the stories we know are transformed and the tales we've yet to hear are introduced for the very first time.
