According to Hawaii News Now reports, many Hawaiʻi residents are calling for government accountability, signing a petition demanding an investigation into possible corruption by a state lawmaker. Federal court documents reveal a $35,000 cash payment to an unnamed “influential legislator,” recorded by former Rep. Ty Cullen, who served as an FBI informant.
Hawaii lawmakers are divided over the call for an investigation. Rep. Kim Coco Iwamoto and Rep. Kanani Souza support an impartial review by legislators not in office in 2022. According to Hawaii News Now reports, Souza emphasized “transparency, our accountability, and good government,” a view shared by Rep. Della Au Belatti, who called for immediate and open hearings.
Despite strong public demand, state responses have been mixed. The Hawaii Department of the Attorney General declined to comment. The State House acknowledged receiving the petition but has taken no further action, stating that the House has received the petition and will review it. As the legislative session begins, the House and Senate will determine the petition’s outcome.
