As January rolls into gear, the Hickory Police Department is revving up its traffic enforcement efforts with a focus on Hwy 70 SE between South Center Street and Fairgrove Church Road SE. According to the announcement on the City of Hickory's official website, the campaign titled P.A.C.T. -- Pay Attention in City Traffic -- aims to clamp down on red light runners and those guilty of other traffic no-nos like speeding and tailgating.
In their quest to create safer streets, law enforcement will be particularly on the lookout for drivers who aren't giving the road their full attention, those who tempt fate by rushing through yellows and careen past reds, also those who crowd the car in front like sardines in a can, and others who dismiss the rules of the road. Pedestrians aren't left out of this safety dance; they're encouraged to only cross at designated spots, wait for the friendly walk signal, and, when night descends, to don reflective gear to make them visible in the dark.
Drivers, take heed: your steel chariots aren't alone out there. The P.A.C.T. initiative also urges motorists to keep their eyes peeled for those traversing on foot, particularly at crosswalks and intersections, even when the roads curve and turn. Cyclists, who may feel they pedal in the shadow of cars, should hear this clearly – they're seen as equals on the road, and as such, must follow the same rules as their gas-guzzling counterparts, riding with traffic and adhering to traffic signals without exception, as mentioned on the City's official website.
The Hickory Police Department is urging motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians to remain vigilant and comply with traffic laws to help ensure public safety. Officials thanked residents for their cooperation and emphasized that individual responsibility plays a key role in maintaining safe roadways throughout the city.
