An 82-year-old man from Holly met a tragic end on the morning of last Friday after his vehicle veered off I-475 and crashed in the median. Grand Blanc Township Police Department reports that the incident occurred south of the Hill Road interchange at around 8:25 a.m. The man, whose name has not been released, was driving a 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche when, for reasons yet unknown, the truck left the roadway and entered the median, as stated by ABC12.
Once in the median, his vehicle struck an emergency turnaround, which sent the Avalanche airborne and resulted in a rollover crash. Unfortunately, during the crash, the vehicle ejected the elderly driver, clearly indicating he may not have been wearing a seatbelt. The Grand Blanc Township Fire Department was present to assist in blocking traffic while investigators from the Crash Investigation Reconstruction Team worked to gather evidence for around three hours, WNEM reported.
Emergency responders transported the man to Hurley Medical Center in Flint, where he was subsequently pronounced dead. The police have ruled out speeding and intoxication as factors in the crash, although the investigation into what caused the man to leave the roadway is ongoing. In an empathetic statement, the local authorities shared, "Our thoughts and prayers go out to this crash victim's family," as CBS Detroit recounted.
The crash resulted in significant traffic delays, with reports indicating that the highway wasn't fully cleared for several hours after the incident. Alongside local police, the Genesee County Sheriff's Office and the Metro Police Authority of Genesee County also assisted at the scene.
