Houston residents are experiencing an unusually warm start to January, with temperatures soaring high enough to potentially break records. According to the National Weather Service, the city's high for today could near 78 degrees, flirting with the day's record high of 79 degrees. This warmth is accompanied by mostly cloudy skies and a persistent south wind gusting up to 30 mph, with a slight chance of showers throughout the day.
Turning to the evening forecast, patchy fog is expected to develop after 2 a.m., ushering in a night of mostly cloudy conditions and lows around 69 degrees. The south wind will continue, albeit at a slower pace, between 5 to 10 mph and gusts that may reach 25 mph. As the fog clears by Friday morning, Houston will see an increased likelihood of showers and thunderstorms—some potentially heavy and gusty—as a cold front approaches, FOX 26 Houston reports.
The weekend forecast anticipates a sharp drop in temperatures behind the departing front, with highs retreating to the 50s and lower 60s, a stark contrast to the preceding days' unseasonable warmth. Friday night could see the mercury dip to around 53, with southwest winds shifting to the northwest after midnight. While the chance of precipitation continues, it will decrease compared to earlier estimates.
The chilly weather following the front's passage will set a new tone for the coming days, with early next week promising a return to a typical January chill. The daytime highs will plummet, aiming for the upper 50s, while nights could see lows as cold as 39 degrees. For those participating in Sunday's marathon, it's recommended to dress warmly, with temperatures projected to linger in the low 40s during the early morning hours.
