The City of Jacksonville’s Emergency Preparedness Division has opened a warming center to assist residents during the cold weather. The Legends Center, located at 5130 Soutel Drive, will be available from 9:00 p.m. today through Monday morning for those in need of heat.
The warming center has been opened in response to the National Weather Service’s forecast of dangerously low temperatures, with wind chills expected to drop into the 20s. The center provides a location for residents most at risk from the cold to seek shelter.
Transportation to the warming center will be available via JTA buses, providing access to the Legends Center. The center will be staffed and offer basic necessities such as water, though residents are encouraged to bring additional items like bedding, medication, and personal belongings.
Non-profit organizations are also providing support during the cold weather by offering additional shelters. The City Rescue Mission, Sulzbacher Center, and Trinity Rescue Mission are making accommodations available for individuals experiencing homelessness during the cold spell.
Residents can find full details, including the warming center’s hours and available services, on the City of Jacksonville’s website.
