A Jefferson Parish sheriff’s deputy was tragically killed in a traffic collision while performing escort duties for a funeral in New Orleans. The incident occurred Friday morning at approximately 11:40 a.m. on Airline Highway. According to details provided by local authorities, the deputy was a 16-year department veteran and is survived by a spouse and two children. WWLTV reported that the fatality occurred when a sedan collided with the deputy's motorcycle from behind.
The New Orleans Police Department has launched an investigation into the crash. Early findings suggest that, as part of the procession duties, the deputy was coming to a stop in the roadway when another vehicle struck him, rendering severe injuries which would later claim his life after transport to a local hospital. "This is a hard day for us. This is a hard day for law enforcement," NOLA.com reported Jefferson Parish Chief Deputy John Fitzpatrick as saying. No charges have been filed at this time, and the NOPD is encouraging anyone with information to come forward.
Airline Highway was temporarily closed in both directions due to the accident, causing local authorities to advise motorists to seek alternative routes until the scene was cleared. The deceased deputy’s identity was not immediately released pending notification of family members, as authorities and community members began to express their grief and support for those impacted by the tragedy.
The driver of the sedan involved was also hospitalized, their condition reported by officials has not been disclosed to the public yet. Jefferson Parish Sheriff Joseph Lopinto, who was out of town at the time of the accident, rushed back upon receiving the news. "We have a wife upstairs and kids upstairs dealing with this traumatic event," Fitzpatrick told reporters, as the law enforcement community reels from the sudden loss, as stated by NOLA.
