Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris has appointed Jerri Green, a city council member and his Deputy Chief of Staff, to serve as interim Chief Public Defender. Green, who has been affiliated with the Shelby County Public Defender’s Office since 2009, will begin the role on January 12, succeeding Phyllis Aluko, according to Action News 5.

During Harris’ administration, Green applied her legal background to support reform efforts and public safety initiatives. Her work included involvement in programs aimed at reducing recidivism through employment-focused strategies. Local Memphis highlighted Green’s focus on issues affecting indigent individuals, vulnerable populations, and youth in Shelby County. She previously ran a gubernatorial campaign and currently serves as the District 2 representative on the Memphis City Council.

Green’s previous work includes several justice reform initiatives, including the reduction of solitary confinement for adults and juveniles and the launch of the nation’s first government-run free gun lock by mail program. WREG reported that Green focuses on fairness, dignity, and quality representation for clients of the Public Defender's Office. She stated, "I am honored to accept this role and grateful for the opportunity to continue serving the people of Shelby County."

Green has been appointed to lead the office responsible for managing over 22,000 cases each year in Shelby County. WREG stated that Mayor Harris referenced her legal experience and public service background. In this position, Green’s experience in policy and public service will contribute to the county’s public defense operations.
