Kapaa residents and commuters should plan for delays as road work on Kawaihau Road continues through February 28, pending weather conditions. Hawaiian Dredging Construction Company Inc., contracted by the Department of Water, is completing utility work and excavation for the Kapaʻa Homesteads Tank Project.
For locals, this means enduring one-lane closures on portions of Kawaihau Road, which stretches from the intersection of Kaapuni Road to Kapahi Road. These disruptions will take place on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Moreover, parking will not be allowed within the designated work zones, potentially complicating the usual routines and spaces where residents lay their vehicles to rest.
The expanded scope of work includes constructing two 0.5-million-gallon storage tanks and approximately 1,700 linear feet of water lines ranging from 16-inch to 12-inch. These improvements are aimed at enhancing the local water system, including necessary storm drain enhancements. According to the County of Kauai's website, "Every effort will be made to complete this project efficiently and with minimal disruption. We appreciate your patience and support as we work to improve the water system in your community."
Travelers on Kawaihau Road should expect delays and allow extra travel time during work hours. Motorists are reminded to follow traffic signs and flaggers, and to watch for steel plates covering sections of the road. Access to properties will be maintained despite the construction.
For more information or concerns, contact Chansen Oshiro at Hawaiian Dredging Construction Co. at (808) 397-9627, or Scott Suga at the Department of Water at (808) 245-5411. The schedule runs through February 28 but may change due to weather.
