Over this past weekend, an antisemitic act of vandalism marred the scenic landscape of Nounou Mountain, igniting condemnation from local authorities and reflecting a broader, unsettling trend of hate crimes that seem to penetrate even the most tranquil of places. Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami didn't mince words, stating, "We are aware of and strongly condemn the antisemitic vandalism that occurred this past weekend on Nounou Mountain, along the Sleeping Giant Trail," according to a statement published by the County of Kaua'i.
"This kind of hateful behavior is not who we are as a community, and it has no place on Kaua‘i. We are a community guided by aloha, respect, and inclusion, and efforts to intimidate, spread fear, or divide us have no place here. We remain committed to ensuring Kaua‘i is a safe and welcoming place for all residents and visitors," Kawakami affirmed, reinforcing the island's commitment to being a safe haven for both locals and visitors alike. Meanwhile, the Kaua‘i Police Department has acknowledged the incident, with Chief Elliott Kalani Ke noting the Department of Land and Natural Resources' role as the chief investigative body, "The Kaua‘i Police Department (KPD) is aware of recent vandalism on Nounou Mountain, along the trail commonly known as the Sleeping Giant Trail. The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) is the lead agency investigating this incident, as the trail is located on state-managed land. KPD is providing assistance to DLNR as needed," Ke said, as noted by the county's press release.
As investigators work to identify those responsible and understand their motives, authorities are asking the public to help. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Department of Land and Natural Resources at (808) 643-DLNR or the Kaua‘i Police Department Dispatch at (808) 241-1711. In emergencies, call 911.
