The Knox County Regional Forensic Center is observing National Medicolegal Death Investigation (MDI) Week from Sunday through Saturday. The observance highlights the work of medicolegal death investigators, coroners, forensic pathologists, and their support staff, whose efforts contribute to public health and safety, according to a Facebook post by the center.

Chris Thomas, chief administrative officer and director of the Knox County Regional Forensic Center, noted that medicolegal death investigators respond to nearly every death that occurs outside a medical facility or is considered sudden, unexpected, or unnatural, according to the center’s Facebook page. These investigators work with law enforcement and medical personnel to examine death scenes, document findings, and consult with family members. Despite the importance of their work, public awareness of their role is often limited.

The Knox County Regional Forensic Center operates 24/7 and provides services across 23 counties, including autopsies and official medical examinations for Knox, Anderson, and Blount counties. According to the center’s official Facebook page, its mission includes conducting professional death investigations, educating the public about sudden or unnatural deaths, offering consultations and court testimony, and providing research support to other organizations.

To highlight the work of their 14 medicolegal death investigators (MDIs), the Knox County Regional Forensic Center plans to feature dedicated posts on their Facebook page throughout the week. Chris Thomas noted that MDIs respond to cases continuously and assist families during difficult times.
