The Knoxville Fire Department battled a blaze at a local business on Sutherland Avenue on Sunday night, as reported by WVLT. Crews were called to 1957 Sutherland Avenue, near Donald Lee Erickson Avenue, after a 911 call at 8:31 p.m. reported smoke emanating from the building. Upon arrival, they discovered flames at the back of the establishment and managed to extinguish the fire within ten minutes.
The fire department's rapid response curtailed what could have manifested as a larger disaster, especially significant considering the building's lack of fire alarms and sprinkler systems, an issue made evident by the reports from WATE stating that the structure was not equipped with such safety mechanisms. This incident marks the first working structure fire faced by the KFD in 2026. It highlights the perennial peril that buildings without adequate fire-prevention systems pose to the community.
No injuries were reported as the building was unoccupied during the time of the conflagration, although it did incur moderate damage from fire, smoke, and water. WBIR states the Knoxville Fire Department's Fire Investigations Unit has remained on the scene in an effort to ascertain the cause of the fire.
In a display of coordinated efficiency, response to the fire included multiple units—Engine 1, Engine 2, Engine 5, Engine 9, Ladder 1, Ladder 9, Rescue 1, Battalion Chief 1, Battalion Chief 2, and the special addition of Tanker 1—with a total of 23 firefighters addressing the emergency as noted by officials the incident was the first of its kind for the Knoxville Fire Department in the nascent year, signaling a potent start for KFD's commitment to public safety.
