After a collision involving two tractor-trailers on Monday afternoon, I-640 West near the I-75 split in Knoxville was shut down for several hours, causing traffic disruptions. According to the WVLT report, the Knoxville Police Department responded to the incident, which occurred around 4:40 p.m., and fortunately resulted in no serious injuries.
The closure of the roadway was necessitated by one of the vehicles overturning and leaking fuel onto the pavement. "Avoid the area and seek alternate routes if possible," the Knoxville Police Department advised, as reported by WATE. The detour rerouted traffic onto connected interstates, I-75 and I-275, during the roadway closure.
Mark Nagi, a spokesperson for the Tennessee Department of Transportation, mentioned that traffic was being diverted due to a multi-vehicle commercial crash with a fuel spill. Nagi's comments indicated that the traffic situation might persist for a considerable amount of time, as cleanup crews worked to remove the spilled fuel and clear the crash site. Both the WBIR article and WATE's coverage highlighted that Knoxville Fire Department crews were on the scene managing the hazardous material spill. The incident posed a significant inconvenience for commuters as the I-75/275 split on I-640 West was closed for a duration.
By early Tuesday morning, reports from multiple sources, including WVLT and WATE, indicated that I-640 West had reopened, and traffic had returned to normal flow. The quick action of local authorities and cleanup crews enabled the resumption of travel through the major thoroughfare, mitigating potential prolonged disruptions to Knoxville's transportation network.
