A fatal accident occurred in Lafayette County on Wednesday during storm cleanup when a resident fell while refilling a generator, sustaining a serious head injury. Emergency responders arrived at around 3 p.m., and the individual was airlifted to Regional One Health in Memphis for treatment but died the following day. The victim’s identity has not been released out of respect for the family, according to Action News 5.
Steve Quarles, Director of Lafayette County Emergency Management, extended sympathies to those affected. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends during this incredibly difficult time," he said. Quarles also urged the community to be cautious during the storm due to slick surfaces, reduced visibility, and the risk of physical exhaustion, as reported by WREG.
Lafayette County Emergency Management is advising residents to be careful during storm clean-up and when using machinery in winter weather. Darkhorse Press Now also shared safety reminders. This follows three recent deaths in nearby Tate County. Local authorities and community members are responding to the storm and providing assistance to those affected.
