Yesterday, near Lake Merritt, a 78-year-old woman ended up in the hospital with head injuries after a purse snatching in Oakland's Cleveland Heights neighborhood, according to police.
Officers say the thief yanked her purse during a struggle, dragging her to the pavement before taking off from the scene. By the time police arrived, the suspect was gone, and the woman was on her way to a hospital.
As reported by The Mercury News, the robbery happened around 2:15 PM at the intersection of Newton and Lester avenues. Police say the suspect grabbed the victim's purse, which held some cash and an iPhone, during the scuffle. She suffered head injuries in the fall and was taken for treatment. Investigators believe the robber may have run toward a waiting vehicle but have not released a detailed description of the suspect so far.

The Oakland Police Department is asking anyone in the area to check their surveillance footage and speak up if they saw anything. The Robbery Unit can be reached on its tip line at 510-238-3326.
Detectives are canvassing the neighborhood and reviewing nearby surveillance footage to track the suspect's movements. Investigators are especially interested in any images or videos that could capture the moment of the theft or the suspect's escape route.
Lake Merritt Safety Concerns
Daytime robberies and strong-arm thefts around Lake Merritt and nearby neighborhoods have been rattling residents for years, and this latest incident is unlikely to calm anyone's nerves. Community members and police have both urged people to stay alert, even during broad daylight.
Previous high-profile attacks in the area, including one that left an elderly man critically injured, have pushed neighbors to call for more patrols and added surveillance, according to ABC7. Residents say seniors, who often walk the lake for exercise and fresh air, feel particularly vulnerable.
Police are hoping witnesses from Wednesday's robbery will help move the case forward. Anyone who saw the incident near Newton and Lester avenues or who may have captured it on a phone, doorbell camera, or security system is asked to contact investigators. Tips and footage can be shared through the department's usual tip channels or by calling the Robbery Unit directly at 510-238-3326.
