Six inmates escaped from the River Bend Detention Center in Lake Providence late Thursday night, prompting a multi-agency manhunt across northeast Louisiana. The East Carroll Parish Sheriff’s Office reported that deputies, along with several neighboring agencies, are searching rural roads, waterways, and dense brush, with a significant law enforcement presence continuing yesterday morning.
The East Carroll Parish Sheriff’s Office identified the escapees as Destin Brogan, 22; Kolin Looney, 21; Krisean Salinas, 21; Kevin Slaughter, 25; Trenton Taplin, 30; and Koplelon Vicknair, 20, according to KNOE. Officials released booking photos of the six and said the search is ongoing throughout East Carroll Parish, with deputies checking roads and rural waterways as part of the operation.
Court and jail records indicate that several of the escapees were in pretrial custody at River Bend on violent charges, and one is listed as a state Department of Corrections inmate. WBRZ reported that Brogan was awaiting a May 11 trial on a second-degree murder charge, while Taplin faced first-degree murder and attempted-murder charges in separate cases.
Manhunt and where to report tips
The East Carroll Parish Sheriff’s Office said its full force is actively involved in the search, with neighboring agencies assisting, and deputies are checking roads and waterways throughout the parish. Residents near Lake Providence may see increased patrols and temporary checkpoints as authorities work to contain the search area. Anyone with information about the escapees’ whereabouts is asked to contact the sheriff’s office at (318) 559-2800.
The escape comes after a high-profile New Orleans jail breakout last spring that left multiple inmates at large and prompted a months-long manhunt. The final escapee from that incident was arrested in Atlanta in October, highlighting the extensive scope such searches can involve.
What this means for pending cases
Since several of the men were in pretrial detention, their escapes complicate upcoming court proceedings and evidence management, and prosecutors may pursue additional escape charges once the suspects are apprehended.
