Starting February 2, the Las Vegas area sees a major step forward in the fight against homelessness and housing instability with the expansion of the Eviction Diversion Program (EDP). Originally piloted in the Las Vegas Justice Court, it's now extending its reach to also cover Henderson and North Las Vegas, according to a recent announcement from the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada. Designed to aid seniors and individuals receiving SSI benefits due to a disability, the EDP connects tenants and landlords with resources to prevent evictions and promote stable housing situations.
With a significant backing from the 2025 Nevada Legislature and AB475 funding, the EDP has reportedly kept close to 90% of at-risk tenants in their homes, as mentioned on Clark County's official website. The expanded program is a collaborative effort involving Clark County Social Services, Legal Aid of Southern Nevada, the Courts, and landlords, working together to bring seniors and disabled individuals from the verge of eviction to securing lasting housing solutions.
The new initiative also introduces standardized eviction forms that are accessible on the Civil Law Self-Help Center website, ensuring a more streamlined and uniform filing process for the Las Vegas, Henderson, and North Las Vegas Justice Courts. To be eligible for the program, seniors aged 62 and older or those on SSI due to disability facing eviction for the failure of rent payment must file a tenant answer within the stipulated notice period.
Clark County, known for its oversight of the Las Vegas Strip, serves a population of 2.4 million residents and a staggering 45.6 million yearly visitors, as detailed on their website. The county provides a wide array of services ranging from airport management, air quality compliance, and social services, among others. Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada, founded in 1958, offers indispensable legal assistance to those who can't afford it, ensuring access to justice for all sectors of the community, especially the most vulnerable.
