Lewisville locals who hope to seek a role in shaping their city are now poised to take their ambitions to the ballot, as the candidate filing period for the May general election is open. Set to replace incumbents in City Council Places 1 and 3, community members interested in running for office can submit their candidacies until February 13, reports the city's official announcement.
Bob Troyer and Ronni Cade, the existing City Council members for Places 1 and 3, respectively, will likely see new challengers emerge, as the positions come up for grabs every three years. However, there's a fresh hurdle for candidates: they must secure signatures from Lewisville voters, owing to a late 2025 Charter Amendment. Each aspirant's petition must articulate the specific place on the council they're targeting and garner enough legitimate signers to meet the City's threshold – otherwise, their political bids may be cut short.
This new requirement is intended to ensure that a candidate has a base of support within the city, although some may view it as an additional barrier to entry. All petition details and procedures are outlined on the "May City Council Election" page of the City of Lewisville website, where residents can also check the "Residential Districts" page to see which district they belong to. Aspirants must live in their respective districts to be eligible, but are elected at large by voters across the city.
Advancing towards election day, early voting is scheduled to kick off on April 20 and will run through April 28. The final determination of Lewisville's civic leaders will take place on May 2, as the city comes together to vote. Candidate applications are being accepted at the City Secretary's Office in the Lewisville City Hall, located at 151 W. Church Street, during defined business hours from Monday to Friday.
