The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation is upgrading Līhu‘e Airport’s employee overflow parking lot, converting the current gravel area into a 2.3-acre paved lot with 347 marked stalls, lighting, access control, and security cameras. This expansion adds 117 spaces and aims to reduce pressure on public parking by keeping employee vehicles in a dedicated area, according to the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation.

Currently, the airport has 578 public stalls and a main employee lot with 333 spaces, which can become crowded during peak periods. The new overflow lot is expected to improve availability in the main employee lot, allowing travelers better access to parking during busy times, as reported by the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation.

Alpha, Inc. won a $10.2 million contract to improve Līhu‘e Airport, with work expected to finish by fall 2026. The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation will provide updates on construction-related traffic. Hawai‘i Department of Transportation is also planning a project to add 128 public parking spaces by converting two landscaped areas, targeted for the first half of 2029. These projects are part of the Līhu‘e Airport Optimization Plan, which is being developed with community and stakeholder input.
