As Martin Luther King Jr. Day approaches, Long Beach is adjusting its city services and facilities schedules in recognition of the holiday, which falls on Monday, January 19, 2026. According to a release by the City of Long Beach, park enthusiasts can take solace in the fact all city parks and trails will remain open except for El Dorado Nature Center, which is regularly closed on Mondays. Additionally, emergency services such as fire stations, lifeguard stations, and the main police station front desk will continue operating, ensuring public safety is not compromised during the holiday.
Residents who need emergency gas or water/sewer services can still make calls as both Gas Services Dispatch and Water/Sewer Dispatch will maintain 24/7 availability; the Long Beach Airport will also continue its normal operations, detailed in a press release from the city's website. Despite these services running, Long Beach will see several closures, including the Billie Jean King Main Library, branch libraries, and City Hall, along with the suspension of street sweeping and parking meter enforcement only at meters labeled "Exempt on Holidays."
Pertaining to refuse and recycling, the city has confirmed these services will progress as scheduled on the holiday barring oversized items and special collections pick-ups conducted by the Clean Team, the Long Beach public libraries are set to close both the Saturday before and on the holiday itself, but digital resources will remain accessible at all times to assist those seeking information or entertainment during the period, citizens are encouraged to leverage the online conveniences offered by the city for various services such as bill payments and permit applications.
When it comes to parking, while you may need to feed the meter, there will be no enforcement of street sweeping violations on the holiday, offering a brief respite for Long Beach residents, as stated in the city's announcement. Towing operations and vehicle storage will shut down as well, but will resume their usual schedule post-holiday.
