Long Beach residents get ready to turn your kitchen scraps and yard waste into garden gold, because the city's Compost and Recycling Ambassador Program is back this spring. Offered by the City of Long Beach’s Energy and Environmental Services Department, the program promises to educate and empower locals on how to reduce waste and make the most of their recycling systems.
Starting Thursday, Feb. 19 for English speakers and Saturday, Feb. 21 for Spanish speakers, the seven-week courses cover not just the basics of recycling, but also get into the nitty-gritty of home composting, including the worm-ridden world of vermicomposting, and traditional backyard composting. Thanks to a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency grant, the city is collaborating with Puente Latino Association to offer these programs in Spanish, which is part of a larger effort to extend access to more communities.
Educational sessions will be held in-person at the Department of Energy and Environmental Services offices located at 2929 E. Willow St. To wrap up, participants will be attending a graduation class, marking their successful journey through the program. Graduates emerge as certified Compost and Recycling Ambassadors, ready to inspire others in their community with their expertise and sustainable practices.
Those keen on joining the eco-friendly force can register beginning Monday, Jan. 12 at 10 a.m., the City of Long Beach announced. They made it clear: whether you're a novice or a pro at this, you can join in. However, space is limited, and preregistration is essential, so secure that spot fast. Miss out on the spring class? Not to worry. There'll be another opportunity come fall, with details to be announced later on.
