Last Friday, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass teamed up with nonprofit organization Project Street Vet to extend support to the city's most vulnerable residents and their four-legged friends. As part of Mayor Bass' Inside Safe initiative, a Harbor City interim-housing site became a pop-up clinic where volunteer veterinarians provided essential services to pets belonging to the homeless. According to Mayor Bass' office, the outreach saw 31 cats and dogs receive check-ups, vaccines, and flea/tick prevention. Vouchers for spay and neuter services were also distributed as part of the efforts to keep pets healthy and with their owners.

"When unhoused Angelenos can stay united with their pets they are more likely to come inside and stay housed," Mayor Bass explained. She emphasized the intended synergy between the Inside Safe program and organizations like Project Street Vet, which aim to simultaneously address pet care and housing insecurity. In recent accomplishments, the Inside Safe initiative has reportedly cleared nearly 120 encampments throughout Los Angeles, assisting thousands of individuals to find shelter.

The collaboration highlights Dr. Kwane Stewart's impactful legacy, who was recognized as CNN’s 2023 Hero of the Year for his direct vet-to-pet care on city streets. Founded on his compassionate approach—that operates firmly on a principle of “No Judgment. Just Help”—Project Street Vet has become a pillar in the community for facilitating access to veterinary services for pet owners facing homelessness.

Mayor Bass has not only led efforts to house the homeless but also to prevent the crisis from deepening. Advancements have been made in accelerating affordable housing unit development, implementing an anti-eviction program, and exploring innovative housing solutions through initiatives like LA4LA. These actions, as highlighted in the recent announcement, are parts of a broader strategy to robustly and humanely address the complex challenge of homelessness in Los Angeles.

Since its inception in 2021, Project Street Vet has delivered medical care and support to over 2,600 pets in Los Angeles County. The nonprofit envisions a future where every pet family, regardless of housing status, has access to necessary veterinary care—a vision that is slowly materializing through partnerships with civic leaders and dedicated volunteers.
