The retail landscape continues its transformation as Macy's announced the closure of its Pittsburgh Mills Mall location, set to shutter as part of the company's nationwide downsizing. A Macy's spokesperson shared in a statement to TribLive, "After careful consideration, we’ve made the decision to close our Macy’s store at Pittsburgh Mills. The decision allows us to focus on improving nearby Macy’s locations and invest in the stores and digital experiences where customers are choosing to shop today."
This store closure is one of 150 locations Macy's is tackling through 2026 as part of its "A Bold New Chapter" strategy, initially unveiled in February 2024. Similarly, a quote found on Macy's corporate website explains this move: "Closing any store is never easy, but as part of our Bold New Chapter strategy, we are closing underproductive Macy's stores to allow us to focus our resources and prioritize investments in our go–forward stores, where customers are already responding positively to better product offerings and elevated service," said Tony Spring, chairman and CEO. Macy's has not provided an exact date for the final day of operations at the Pittsburgh Mills location, according to CBS News Pittsburgh.
Sale signs will go up mid-January, as clearance operations are slated to extend for approximately 10 weeks, TribLive reported. The forthcoming closure at Pittsburgh Mills follows a trend of Pennsylvania locations that have ceased operations, which included stores in Philadelphia, Altoona, and Exton in the previous year. With the Pittsburgh Mills store, approximately 17 businesses remain in the once bustling mall.
Macy's, operating on a data-driven strategy, will invest in 350 stores while developing small-format locations and exploring new ventures. Employees at the closing location have been assured of support, including potential transfer opportunities where available and severance as applicable. These measures aim to cushion the impact on Macy's workforce as the company navigates its structural changes.
