A man was shot in the leg early Saturday morning after a fight broke out just inside the door of the Locker Room Bar in downtown Johnstown, according to emergency officials. Police said one person was taken to the hospital following the shooting, which happened at Washington and Johns streets around 2 a.m.
According to WJAC, police have not disclosed the full extent of the injuries beyond confirming the man was shot in the leg. The outlet reported that authorities provided an update on the shooting Saturday and said the story would be updated as more information becomes available. The Locker Room Bar, at 101 Washington Street, had only been open for about a month, having taken over the former Stadium Pub & Grille space across from Sargent's Stadium at the Point after a recent ownership change and rebrand, according to a post on the bar's Facebook page.
The Tribune-Democrat reported that Johnstown police were dispatched to the 100 block of Washington Street at approximately 2 a.m. Saturday following reports of shots fired, with emergency radio traffic indicating officers responded immediately to gunfire at the venue, per a post shared in a local Facebook group.
A Bar Reopens Into an Already Tense Summer
The shooting lands in the middle of a rough stretch for Johnstown's nightlife scene and its streets more broadly. Local law enforcement investigated at least nine shootings or shots-fired incidents across the greater Johnstown area between mid-April and mid-May, according to Fox 8 WWCP TV. That surge prompted community town halls and packed city council meetings as residents demanded a stronger police presence.
In response, Johnstown municipal leaders established an inter-departmental task force in June and announced plans for a new police substation aimed at curbing rising violent crime across city neighborhoods, the station reported. Cambria County District Attorney Jessica Aurandt has taken a hard line on prosecuting gun cases, telling Fox 8 in July that her office maintains a strict no-plea-deal policy in serious criminal and gun violence cases, working alongside state and federal agencies to pursue full statutory penalties.
Nightlife Violence Is Not New to Johnstown
This is not the first time a Johnstown bar has become the scene of gunfire. In June 2025, four women were wounded in a shooting outside the Vybe Lounge on Fairfield Avenue after a patron was denied entry, according to ABC 23 WATM TV. The suspect in that case was ultimately charged with four counts of attempted criminal homicide.
State regulators do have tools to respond to bars with repeated violence. Under Pennsylvania's Nuisance Bar Program, established under Section 470 of the Liquor Code, the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board can deny liquor license renewals or pursue court-ordered closures for establishments showing a pattern of violence or safety hazards, relying on citation records and community feedback. It remains unclear whether any such action is being considered in connection with the Locker Room Bar.
State Money, Local Roots of Violence
State officials have also been pouring money into prevention efforts. The Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency approved more than $65 million in Violence Intervention and Prevention grants in April, including $499,368 awarded to the Greater Johnstown Community YMCA to support youth outreach and anti-violence programming.
Even so, crime data compiled in August put Johnstown's violent crime rate at roughly 586.5 incidents per 100,000 residents, giving residents an estimated 1-in-293 annual risk of violent victimization, according to DoorProfit. That risk, the data indicates, is heavily concentrated around nightlife venues after dark. WJAC-TV reported in July that DA Aurandt attributes a significant portion of the recent gun violence to retaliatory disputes between opposing local factions, noting that officials have observed similar cycles of retaliatory street violence in the city before, between 2014 and 2018.
Saturday's shooting adds to a string of recent violent incidents Hoodline has tracked in Johnstown, including an 18-year-old Moxham shooting victim who gave police conflicting accounts of his injuries earlier this month, and a homicide charge filed against a Johnstown teen in the Somerset Street shooting death of a local man in June. No arrests connected to the Locker Room Bar shooting had been announced as of Saturday, and police have not released details on a suspect or motive.
