Authorities are investigating a stabbing incident that occurred in the early morning at a Lower Manhattan subway station. The attack happened around 5:20 a.m. Wednesday at the Broadway–Lafayette station on the B/D/F line, leaving a 51-year-old man with a stab wound in his back, Gothamist reports.

The altercation began as a verbal argument between the victim and a suspect described as a male aged between 20 and 30 years on board a southbound train, the conflict quickly escalated and became physical, and after the train reached the station, spilled out onto the platform, according to AM New York. Police say the suspect then produced a knife and stabbed the man before fleeing to an unknown location.

First responders transported the wounded man to Bellevue Hospital, where he is reported to be in stable condition, NYPD officials also mention that they are still in the midst of gathering details surrounding the incident and have not yet released a detailed description of the possible perpetrator, while transit crime incidents have exhibited a minor increase compared to last year's data, nearly half of the reported crimes this year have been grand larcenies with felony assaults and robberies following suit.

While the search for the assailant continues, there have been no arrests so far, and law enforcement is urging anyone with information to come forward, the NYPD is soliciting tips which can be submitted anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 800-577-TIPS for English or 888-57-PISTA for Spanish, as well as online at crimestoppers.nypdonline.org or via the app X @NYPDTips.
