A four-alarm fire engulfed a warehouse on the Brooklyn waterfront near Columbia Street this afternoon, as the FDNY scrambled to contain the flames. According to CBS News New York, the fire call came in just after 12:30 p.m., and the incident occurred near the site of another catastrophic fire that happened just four months prior.
The blaze also brought to mind the destruction of an NYPD storage facility in 2022, a fire that eradicated years of collected evidence, including DNA and items from crime scenes. The proximity of these fires raises concerns, though no direct connection has been established at this time. Notably, the area of Red Hook is no stranger to such incidents, with the latest fire occurring next to a warehouse heavily damaged in September at a nearby location.
Footage captured on the Citizen App and shared by News 12 Brooklyn revealed thick black smoke billowing into the sky, a visible testament to the severity of the fire. The disruptive plumes of smoke were a hallmark of an unsettling scene, as FDNY officials confirmed the fire's initiation shortly after the noon hour at 700 Columbia St.
While the flames raged and first responders worked diligently to extinguish the fire, authorities reported that there have been no injuries.
