Charlotte County is charting a new course in public safety with the appointment of Matthew McElroy as fire chief and public safety director, a move solidifying the leadership within Charlotte County Public Safety. Bearing over two decades of field experience, McElroy's tenure as acting fire chief began on Oct. 31, 2025, preparing him for his current comprehensive responsibilities.

With his roots tracing back four generations in Florida, McElroy's journey threaded through the United States Navy as a hospital corpsman, serving the First Reconnaissance Marines since 1991. Pivoting to fire service in 1997, he joined the ranks of Port Orange Fire Department as a firefighter and advanced to paramedic, which appears to have been a natural progression for the veteran corpsman. McElroy's experience continued to build with Charlotte County Fire & EMS since 2002, holding various roles and eventually climbing to the position of deputy chief in 2024.

According to a Charlotte County press release, Chief McElroy will not only oversee Fire & EMS but also Animal Control and Radio Communications. His focus will be sharpened on expanding interagency coordination and community risk reduction programs, complementing his already notable track record, including receiving the accolade of department’s Firemedic of the Year while part of Marine Operations.

Educationally fortified, McElroy boasts a Bachelor's in Public Safety Administration and associate degrees in Emergency Medical Services and Arts, shaping him into a figure of wisdom and guidance as a certified fire instructor for 15 years. His contribution extends into the aquatic realm as a NAUI dive instructor, masterminding the Rapid Diver Program that has certified over 50 first responder divers, members of the FDNY being among the decorated graduates. County Administrator Hector Flores made note of McElroy's excellence, stating, "He knows this department from the ground up and has earned the respect of the men and women he now leads."

"Serving this department and community has been one of the greatest honors of my life," McElroy told Charlotte County. His commitment to a service-oriented framework and striving for excellence remains evident as he addresses the department's future, ready to lead a team of professionals sharing his community centric vision. As McElroy steps into his new role, Charlotte County reinforces its values of dedication to service, safety, and fostering strong community partnerships.
