In a recent cautionary notice posted on its social media, the McNairy County Sheriff's Office warns residents against a telephone scam involving false claims of missed grand jury subpoenas and unpaid legal fines. According to the McNairy County Sheriff's Office, these deceptive callers impersonate law enforcement or court officials and demand immediate payment through gift cards, wire transfers, or other electronic means.
The alert underscores the fact that the Sheriff's Office does not solicit payments over the phone, by text, or email—and indeed, such practices are not within their operating procedures. "This is a scam," the Sheriff's Office statement is clear, as it continues to debunk the legitimacy of these calls. "We do not collect fines, bonds, or fees in this manner," they added, reinforcing the importance of recognizing such fraudulent activities.
For anyone receiving these suspicious calls, the Sheriff's Office advises a swift and decisive response: hang up immediately. They urge the public not to send money or share personal information under any circumstances. Instead, they recommend contacting the Sheriff's Office directly—using established and verifiable contact details—to confirm any legal matters.
Anyone who believes they have been targeted, or worse, has lost money to this scam, should report it to their office, “Stay alert and share this warning with family and friends,” the post concludes.
