Mecklenburg County has announced that Health Director Dr. Raynard Washington will resign on January 20, 2026. According to Mecklenburg County, Washington joined the county in 2020 and became director in 2021, guiding the region through public health challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic. He focused on increasing access to testing and immunizations for vulnerable communities. “Serving as Mecklenburg County Health Director has been an absolute honor,” he said.
Dr. Washington's tenure included strengthening coordination with regional agencies during the pandemic and establishing initiatives to reduce violence, such as the state's first Office of Violence Prevention and the public health roadmap The Way Forward. He also expanded healthcare access through mobile units and partnerships with local providers. “An incredibly skilled and resourceful public servant,” said Mecklenburg County Manager Mike Bryant, praising Washington’s community-focused approach.
In the wake of Dr. Washington’s departure, Dr. Kimberly Scott has been appointed to serve as Interim Health Director. Dr. Scott brings over 15 years of experience as a public health practitioner to her new role and stands poised to maintain the county's commitment to public health as outlined by her predecessor's vision. Her background spans across local government, nonprofit sectors, and the halls of academia, bringing a diverse perspective to the position.
Dr. Washington leaves Mecklenburg County with a legacy of strengthened public health infrastructure and a focus on local health concerns. Governor-elect Mikie Sherrill of New Jersey has nominated him as the state’s next Health Commissioner, bringing his expertise to a broader role in public service.
