Memphis police are investigating a fatal shooting that took place on New Year's Eve in Whitehaven. The incident was one of multiple shootings that occurred during the overnight celebrations. According to police, the shooting on McCorkle Road near Raines Road happened just before midnight. On arrival, officers pronounced a man dead at the scene, Action News 5 reports.
A male suspect was initially detained but has subsequently been released, as mentioned in a FOX13 report. Details have been scant, though authorities confirmed that the victim and the suspect were acquainted. Crime scene tape, several MPD cars, and crime scene investigators were observed at the location by FOX13 crews.
Moving beyond the bounds of Whitehaven, another incident has prompted community and police concern. This time, involving a child on the cusp of 2026—WREG covered a story where a five-year-old girl was grazed by a bullet. The incident reportedly happened during a New Year's Eve cookout in the 4000 block of Berrybrook Road. The child's mother, in a statement obtained by WREG, recounted the terrifying moment her daughter was struck while playing on a trampoline.
The girl's father heard "several fireworks and gunshots" in the area at the time of the injury, making it initially unclear from where the shots had originated, as reported by WREG. He rushed the child to St. Francis Hospital, where she was treated for her injury. Thankfully, no other injuries were reported in this incident, although the rising tide of gun violence exacts its toll on the community's sense of security, with every shot fired, each bullet leaving a wake of trauma and questions that linger long after the smoke clears. Anyone with information regarding these incidents is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 901-528-CASH.
