A stretch of Union Avenue in Memphis was closed off last night following reports of a suspicious package in the area. The Memphis Police Department (MPD) swiftly responded to the scene near South Belvedere Boulevard after receiving the call at approximately 4:24 p.m., as detailed by Local Memphis. Officers encountered a large box in a nearby parking lot which prompted the closure of the street and the precautionary evacuation of businesses close by.
The MPD Bomb Squad arrived shortly thereafter to investigate the potential threat. Uncertainty hung over those bustling streets, usually alive with the rhythm of Memphis's daily commerce, as residents and visitors were diverted from their paths. Following a comprehensive examination, the squad deemed the box harmless, and officers began the process to reopen the area to normal traffic, reported FOX13 Memphis.
Earlier reports conflated the incident with a bomb threat, which led to amplified tensions and concerns amongst local citizens and authorities. Yet, the day's events unfolded with no harm as the MPD's careful measures ensured the safety of the Midtown community before the streets reopened, added Action News 5. The swift response and thorough investigation by the MPD highlighted the department's readiness to tackle potential threats in a city where every unknown package can't be taken lightly.
Although the incident caused a temporary interruption to the usual ebb and flow of Midtown traffic and commercial activity, normalcy was restored when Union Avenue was reopened later that evening.
