In a significant act of generosity, Memphis rapper Moneybagg Yo returned to his roots, announcing a hefty donation to bolster support structures for young parents in education. The artist, whose real name is Demario White, visited the Invictus Academy where he presented a check for $20,000 to the Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) Youth Advocacy Program. Targeting teen parent support, the program seeks to improve graduation rates and encourage further education among this demographic.
Having experienced early parenthood himself, Moneybagg Yo's gesture is deeply personal, resonating with his own narrative as described in a FOX13 Memphis report. Despite not elaborating on his journey due to its emotional weight, the rapper conveyed the influence his teen mom had in shaping his life. Addressing students, he emphasized resilience and determination: "You've just gotta stay focused, keep pushing, be able to take constructive criticism," Moneybagg said. "Whatever you're doing, force it on 'em, make 'em get it, you know what I'm saying? Get that drive."
Interim Superintendent Roderick Richmond, during the presentation at Invictus Academy, heralded Moneybagg Yo as an embodiment of the district's motto, "greatness grows here." Praising the rapper's decision to give back to his community, he underlined Memphis' spirit of grit and resilience. Richmond motivated students, declaring, "Whatever it is that your heart desires, you can do it if you put the right effort behind it," echoed in an interview with the Commercial Appeal.
Ms. MSCS revealed that the program will particularly help in providing resources such as free or prioritized local childcare services. These services are critical for young parents who are striving to balance their education while caring for their children, a challenge the rapper appreciates in light of his past. The Invictus Academy currently operates an on-site childcare center, a convenience that facilitates learning for student parents. This infrastructure, according to the Commercial Appeal, is set to benefit from Moneybagg Yo's philanthropy, bolstering the school's ability to serve its young parent population more fully.
