Meta has closed three video game studios with Austin roots this week, dealing a sudden blow to the city’s small but lively virtual reality development scene. Dozens of developers were laid off, and more than 100 local workers are now hunting for their next gig.

The move was first reported by the Austin Business Journal, which said the closures are part of broader cuts inside Meta’s Reality Labs. Reporter Brent Wistrom identified multiple Austin-based teams as affected and noted that staff are already fanning out across the city’s games community in search of new roles.

The shuttered studios include Armature Studio, Twisted Pixel Games, and Sanzaru Games, according to reporting that reviewed internal memos and employee posts. The Verge reports that the closures are part of roughly a 10% reduction across Reality Labs.

Meta has framed the cuts as part of a strategic pivot. “We said last month that we were shifting some of our investment from Metaverse toward Wearables. This is part of that effort, and we plan to reinvest the savings to support the growth of wearables this year,” the company said in a statement, according to Kotaku.

That shift follows reporting that Meta considered trimming its metaverse budget by up to 30% as part of 2026 planning, according to TechCrunch. The potential cuts were flagged in executive budget talks late last year and could include program shutdowns and layoffs.

Which Studios Closed And What They Built

Armature, based in Austin, built a reputation on VR ports and co-developed projects, including the Resident Evil 4 VR release. Twisted Pixel, the studio behind the recently released Marvel’s Deadpool VR, and Sanzaru, the team behind Asgard’s Wrath, were also listed among the groups shut down, according to reporting and staff posts. Kotaku collected several first-hand employee posts confirming the layoffs.

Austin Impact

Local coverage says the shutdowns are already visible in Austin’s real world: Twisted Pixel’s South Congress office is listed for lease, and dozens of developers who worked at Sanzaru and Armature are now circulating résumés. MySanAntonio reported that the closures put a noticeable dent in the city’s already modest VR and games workforce.

Industry analysts say the cuts reflect a broader reckoning. Meta poured years of cash into Reality Labs, but the division has struggled to turn a profit, and reporting on budget planning last month framed the shift as part of a move toward AI and smart glasses. Bloomberg has reported that the unit has lost tens of billions of dollars since 2021.

Meta says it will keep supporting existing VR products even as it pauses some new content, and the company appears to be leaning more on third-party partners for future Quest titles. The Verge notes that some apps will shift into maintenance mode while Meta reallocates teams to its wearables and AI efforts.
