The onslaught of extreme cold weather conditions in Michigan has prompted a series of closures and cancellations across Metro Detroit. The Detroit News reported that the Detroit Zoo and Belle Isle Nature Center will be closed Friday and Saturday in response to the National Weather Service's cold-weather advisory. The advisory, effective from Thursday night through Saturday morning, predicts sub-zero wind chills and potentially hazardous conditions with wind chills down to minus-25 degrees.
Several schools have also announced closures on Friday, with Michigan Tech University being the among the institutions shutting down as reported by The Detroit News. Meanwhile, event organizers are heeding the frosty forecast and cancelling outdoor activities. CBS Detroit noted that the Brrmingham Blast and Oak Park Winterfest are no longer proceeding as planned, with the latter rescheduled for February 15, according to CBS Detroit.
While some events are no longer taking place, others are adapting to the cold embrace. As Birmingham cancels its annual BRRmingham Blast winter festival for the first time in history, Detroit's Fire & Ice Festival decides to forge ahead. The planners are including fire dancers, heated tents, and handing out warmers for attendees as WXYZ reports that the festival aims to "embrace winter and celebrate the outdoors."
Local businesses are feeling the impact of the festival cancellations. James Esshaki, owner of Brooklyn Pizza & Bar, told WXYZ, "With traffic being down, this winter blast would have been nice to have because it would have created some activity." Meanwhile, the city of Detroit has activated emergency shelters to ensure residents have access to warm spaces as bitter cold continues to grip the region, reflecting a deeper awareness of the peril that such weather poses to the community at large.
