In a recent display of support for athletes with intellectual disabilities, officers from the Midwest City Police Department's Community Action Office attended the 2026 Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) Kickoff and Awards Luncheon in Tulsa, an event heralding the launch of this year's fundraising efforts for Special Olympics Oklahoma.
Through a social media post from the Midwest City Police Department, the community learned that in 2025 the LETR raised an impressive $618,000, and there's an aspiration to surpass this figure in the current year—the luncheon both celebrates past achievements and simultaneously sets the stage for upcoming fundraising initiatives.
The LETR for Special Olympics is more than a demonstration of athleticism; it's a pivotal event where law enforcement officers and athletes carry the "Flame of Hope" to the Opening Ceremonies of local, state, and national Special Olympics games, fostering a collaborative spirit that transcends the tracks they run on.
Originating in 1986, the LETR has grown exponentially, with the network now boasting over 185 participating agencies in Oklahoma alone. These figures not only reflect the dedication of those involved but also the enduring support of the community for the Special Olympics movement. The Midwest City Police Department concluded their post with an enthusiasm to share more about the ongoing efforts in the coming months, using the hashtag #LETR.
