Milton has leveled up its sustainability game, securing a "Gold" status from the Atlanta Regional Commission's (ARC) Green Communities program. This upgrade is more than just a badge—it's a testament to the city's commitment to an eco-friendlier future, a commitment that was acknowledged this past Wednesday, according to a recent announcement of the City of Milton.
The evaluation process by the ARC is rigorous, taking place every five years with a deep dive into the local government's sustainability strategies. Blazing past its "Silver" achievement in 2021, Milton has now earned accolades that speak to a historical progression in environmental stewardship. The City's Public Works Director, Sara Leaders, articulated the ethos driving this effort, telling the City of Milton page, "Smart, sensible sustainable projects, practices, and policies serve our citizens well in the short- and long-term." "It's not always easy but it is important – which is why the City has worked diligently on such initiatives, and why this Gold recognition is really worth celebrating."
The bar is set high, with a scorecard spanning ten distinct categories, including water efficiency, land use, and environmental education. Milton's comprehensive approach entailed actions like performing energy audits on all city facilities, increasing recycling opportunities, and developing a green space blueprint, aptly named "Greenprint." Additionally, the city's designation as a Tree City USA and Community Wildlife Habitat further bolstered its environmental credentials.
Aiming to reduce their environmental footprint, local governments across the region have been gauging their green efforts against ARC's stringent criteria. Milton, one among just nine communities recognized this year, excelled with initiatives like efforts to ease traffic congestion, which include improving traffic signal synchronization, and spearheading extensive public outreach on sustainability topics. And, the city isn't resting on its laurels—plans for more recycling events and educational campaigns are already in the pipeline, as they continue to champion smart growth strategies.
