Milwaukee is currently grappling with a severe cold spell that has prompted the National Weather Service (NWS) to issue multiple advisories warning residents of dangerously low temperatures and harsh wind chills. In the latest update, the NWS alerted the public that the extreme cold warning remains in effect until 1 PM CST today, with the cold weather advisory set to continue from this afternoon until noon CST Saturday.

Residents in affected areas, including portions of south central and southeast Wisconsin, are advised to expect wind chills as low as 40 below. "Dangerously cold wind chills could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes," the Extreme Cold Warning stated. To combat the severe weather conditions, individuals are urged to dress warmly in layers, including a hat, face mask, and gloves if they must go outside, and to exercise caution while traveling.

The extreme temperatures are part of a broader pattern, causing daytime highs to struggle to break out of the negatives. The forecast by the NWS projects sunny and cold conditions today with a high near -5 Fahrenheit, and wind chill values could drop to between -25 and -35. Tonight's low is expected to hover around -12, maintaining the frigid feel with wind chills between -20 and -25.

Looking ahead, the Hazardous Weather Outlook anticipates the cold spell will persist, with a 20 percent chance of snow on Saturday and wind chills that will continue to plunge into the teens below zero each night through Monday. "Wind chills in the teens below zero are possible each night Saturday night through Monday night, and may reach Cold Weather Advisory levels Sunday night into Monday morning," the agency remarked.

While spotter activation is not anticipated at this time, the NWS maintains open channels for updates and will provide further advisories as needed. The public is advised to follow the latest weather forecasts and heed the guidance provided to ensure safety during these extreme winter conditions.
