As Minneapolis chills out this winter, its parks are heating up with a suite of activities aimed at fostering community and creativity. Despite flurries of snow, residents have a variety of free and low-cost programs at their fingertips, from picturesque snow sculptures to lively line dancing sessions in downtown parks.
According to a bulletin from the Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board, a wave of public art has swept across Mill Ruins and Father Hennepin Bluff Parks, featuring cold creations by local artists Heather Friedli and the KWE team. These sculptors have transformed ordinary snow into intricate seasonal narratives. The agenda dictates that Friedli will next capture "Summer" at Nicollet Island Park from February 2-6, while Team KWE will craft an "Autumn" theme at Graco Park from February 9-13, and bystanders are welcome to watch the artistic process.
For those who prefer movement to spectatorship, there's line dancing with Billie at the Nicollet Island Pavilion on February 1, as she insists, "If you can count, you can dance," as stated by the MPRB. Ice Lantern Nights will be held Fridays and Saturdays at Graco Park and Water Works Park, where residents can make ice lanterns and place them throughout the parks. Campfires and warming shelters will be available. Graco Park will also host board game nights on Thursdays, with attendees invited to bring their own games or join in on a rotating selection of classics.
For a touch of indulgence, the Galentine Sound Bath + Aura Portraits on February 8 marries healing sounds and visual aura readings in a boutique wellness event. At $77, this pre-registration offering brings a soothing retreat to those seeking solace against the bustling backdrop of the city.
