The search for Missouri's top educators presses on as the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) opens up nominations for the 2027 Regional Teacher of the Year. Recognizing the profound impact educators wield on student achievement, the program seeks to honor those who showcase exceptional commitment, innovation in teaching, and leadership within their schools.
In a move to acknowledge a wider pool of educational talent, DESE invites nominations for the award from any corner, not exclusively limited to winners of school districts' teacher of the year programs. Nominations for this prestigious accolade will remain open until April 14, 2026, offering anonymity unless the nominee requests otherwise, found through DESE's official announcement.
Dr. Karla Eslinger, Commissioner of Education, underscores the link between a teacher’s quality and student success. "Research shows that the most significant impact on the academic performance of a student is the quality of the teacher," she explained on DESE. Her statement obtained by DESE articulates the importance of uplifting educators as a means to boost morale, increase retention, and foster a culture of continuous professional development.
Kim Sixta, the 2026 Missouri Teacher of the Year, remembers the honor bestowed upon having been named Regional Teacher of the Year as an "unexpected and incredible" experience, according to DESE. Echoing the sentiments of her peers, she reflects, "This recognition is a reminder of the value of our work and the purpose all educators share; to serve and uplift young people. I’m deeply grateful for the opportunity to represent my community."
The process of selection will see 34 teachers, determined by Regional Selection Committees composed of both peers and educational administrators, represent varying districts of Missouri. The winners of this initial round will be announced in the upcoming summer, with an invitation following to apply for the honors of Missouri Teacher of the Year, set for revelation in September. Additional details are available on the DESE website for those interested in learning more about the Teacher of the Year program.
