On the brink of a new year, policyholders of Cornerstone National Insurance Company are dealing with the unwelcome news of the company's financial unravelling. In a move confirmed on December 23, 2025, the Circuit Court of Cole County, Missouri, appointed the state’s Department of Commerce and Insurance Director, Angela L. Nelson, to step in and manage the troubled insurer's assets, as reported by the Department of Commerce and Insurance. The court's decision was to initially rehabilitate the company from January 1 to February 28, followed by liquidation starting March 1, 2026. This effectively means all policies by Cornerstone will cease by the end of March in the same year.
The insurer, smaller in scale yet with a reach across 19 states, has been experiencing financial difficulties for some time. Financial reports underscore the dire situation with the company's surplus spiraling down to negative $378,131 as of September 30, 2025, from a positive balance over a million just a year prior. The intervention didn't start at receivership; DCI had already been closely monitoring the company and put it under an Order of Administrative Supervision as early as July 9, 2024. Actions to restrict Cornerstone's insurance writing activities were also taken in at least seven other states.
Rehabilitation and liquidation processes are court-supervised measures intended to orderly wind down a company's operations, ensuring that its assets are fairly distributed among its creditors. For policyholders, the Court's ruling translates to maintaining their current policies until they either expire, are cancelled, or reach the hard deadline of March 1, with all policies to terminate no later than March 31. During this interim period, it is crucial for policyholders to continue premium payments if they wish to maintain their coverage and concurrently to start looking for alternative insurance providers.
The Missouri Department of Commerce and Insurance, charged with the protection of the state's consumers, offers a dedicated FAQ and contact details on their website for those requiring guidance during this transitional time. Policyholders and agents are encouraged to carefully review this information and act quickly to ensure uninterrupted insurance coverage.
