Modesto is now on its way to becoming a hub for advanced cancer care, following Sutter Health’s groundbreaking of a new $380 million cancer center and care complex. As reported by FOX40 News, the center is set to revolutionize patient access to comprehensive cancer treatment and outpatient care in the Central Valley, with an ensemble of around 120 physicians and 400 team members.

Located across from Memorial Medical Center's main entrance at 1800 Coffee Rd., the four-story complex spans 165,000 square feet and promises centralized care. Aiming to open in 2029, it will consolidate various cancer treatments and screenings, including infusion and radiation therapy, alongside specialized surgeries and imaging. Now, Sutter Health's Warner Thomas believes this will yield "better care for people at home," according to a statement he made to FOX40. Expanded surgical options and enhanced outpatient clinics will occupy the third and fourth floors, respectively, adding to Modesto's resources to meet its health care demands.

In terms of service, the center is not just about treating cancer but is designed to provide a seamless journey for patients, featuring greater access to about 150 clinical trials and multiple complementary therapies. It’s a part of Sutter’s mission to reduce the barriers to high-quality, integrated patient care, and according to Vitals by Sutter Health, Dr. David Peterson, chief medical officer of Gould Medical Group, emphasized the efficiency connected care brings, stating, "The center’s design is a great example of how connected care can help us diagnose and treat patients more efficiently, reduce delays and improve outcomes."

The urgency of such a facility is underscored by Stanislaus County's 2025 Community Health Assessment, illuminating a need for more robust cancer support, with the county experiencing higher cancer mortality rates than the state and national averages. Much of Sutter’s approach relies on AI-powered imaging through a partnership with GE Healthcare, providing advanced diagnostics and a breadth of treatments such as chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and targeted therapies. Dr. Alex Garcia-Young, a radiation oncologist with Gould Medical Group, reinforced this vision, saying, "We will meet the evolving needs of those living with cancer while offering guidance, reassurance and support," as noted by Vitals by Sutter Health.

The development of this center is also part of a larger narrative where Sutter Health's commitments in 2025 included new care centers in Lodi, Manteca, Tracy, and Turlock, alongside launching accredited residency programs, all playing a part in enhancing the entire community’s access to healthcare. Sutter Health's efforts align with Mayor Sue Zwahlen's appreciation for the organization's continuous community-focused drive, having said, "These commitments go beyond bricks and mortar or additional clinicians. They represent a promise to improve lives for generations through expanded access to care and support," as per a report by Vitals by Sutter Health.
