On Monday, the City of New Orleans began closing the left travel lane on St. Charles Avenue from Calliope Street to Napoleon Avenue to prepare for the installation of concrete security barriers. The City of New Orleans says these barriers are intended to enhance public safety during the upcoming Mardi Gras celebrations.
Lane closures will occur only in areas where work is actively underway and will move as crews progress, reopening completed sections when possible. The City of New Orleans notes that this effort is part of a larger plan to ensure the safety of attendees during the festive season.
The Department of Public Works, with guidance from the New Orleans Police Department and the Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, is setting up safety measures for Mardi Gras, including concrete barriers. Other agencies are also helping with the preparations. According to the City of New Orleans, "This effort represents one of several measures the City will implement in advance of Mardi Gras to enhance public safety," and some daily commutes may be temporarily affected.
