The New Orleans Police Department is currently investigating the city's first homicide of 2026, which occurred on Friday afternoon. At around 4:25 p.m., officers were dispatched following reports of a shooting in the 3900 block of Downman Road. Upon arrival, they discovered a 24-year-old man who had sustained at least one gunshot wound and was unresponsive. Despite efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim was later found to have been initially transported by private vehicle to the 5900 block of Boeing Street, according to FOX 8 Live.

Detectives are now working to meticulously gather evidence and identify the person or persons responsible, as well as to determine a definitive motive for the crime. The identity of the victim and the official cause of death will be released after an autopsy is performed and next of kin have been notified, as stated by officials from the Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office. The public has been urged to come forward with any information that might aid the investigation. Tips can be shared with NOPD Homicide Section detectives at 504-658-5300 or anonymously through Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111, shared WDSU.

According to a NOLA.com report, two separate crime scenes connected to the shooting incident were cordoned off by police. One location was a Shell gas station on Downman Road, where bullet casings were seen next to a gas pump. The second scene, a few blocks away in the Skyline Apartment complex, became a focal point for mourners. NOPD Senior Police Officer and Public Information Officer Jonathan Morris confirmed the connection between the two scenes, stating that the victim had been shot at the gas station before being taken to the apartment complex, where his death was confirmed.
