The streets of Las Vegas claimed their third traffic-related fatality of the year when a motorcycle collided with a car on New Year's Day. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department reported that around 10:29 PM, at the busy intersection of East Craig Road and North Lamont Street, the encounter between a 2010 Honda Accord and a 2012 Can-Am Spyder resulted in the tragic death of the motorcyclist, according to the LVMPD's release.
The motorcyclist, a 47-year-old male whose name is currently withheld pending notification, was traveling eastbound on Craig Road. Patricia Jauregui, the 46-year-old driver of the Honda, was attempting to make a left turn onto Lamont Street, failing to yield the right of way to the oncoming motorcycle, leading to the inevitable clash. The impact was such that it ejected the rider of the Can-Am onto the roadway, where he met a fatal end.
While the driver of the Honda claimed no injuries from the mishap, her right front passenger, identified as 51-year-old Santiago Lopez-Lopez, reported minor injuries but refused transport to the hospital. The crash scene investigation, according to the LVMPD, remains vigilantly active under their Collision Investigation Section.
Further compounding the seriousness of the incident, authorities said the suspect, identified as Jauregui, showed signs of impairment at the scene. She was later arrested and booked into the Clark County Detention Center on charges related to driving under the influence. Officials noted that incidents involving impaired driving often have far-reaching impacts beyond the crash itself, affecting victims’ families and the wider community while underscoring the consequences of driving while impaired.
As Las Vegas enters the new year, the city is confronting its third traffic-related fatality in a short span of time, underscoring ongoing concerns about road safety. The incident highlights the serious consequences of driving under the influence and reinforces law enforcement’s continued efforts to prevent impaired driving. Officials are urging motorists to exercise caution and responsibility behind the wheel, stressing that each loss serves as a stark reminder of the risks faced by both drivers and pedestrians on local roadways, as per the LVMPD.
