The City of Newcastle, Oklahoma, is spreading kindness this Valentine’s season in a simple way. City officials are asking residents to make handmade Valentine’s cards for children at Oklahoma Children’s Hospital OU Health. The idea is to share encouragement and brighten hospital rooms with thoughtful messages. The City of Newcastle hopes to collect more than the 1,000 cards that were delivered last year.
With a defined window stretching from January 1 to February 10, contributors are given clear instructions to adhere to when crafting their cards: Positivity and encouragement are the themes, while avoiding hollow promises or medical prognoses, keeping in mind the delicate nature of the recipients. Adults and kids alike, alongside schools and libraries, have been tagged as potential participants. As shared on the City of Newcastle Facebook post, participants should drop off their handmade cards, steering clear of including personal details, at designated locations including City Hall, the Parks Department, or the Pioneer Library.
The card drive includes clear guidelines on what messages are okay to write and what to avoid, such as sharing personal information. These rules help keep the cards safe and appropriate for the children. Local partners are helping with the effort, including Newcastle schools and the Pioneer Library System – Newcastle.
Dropping off a Valentine card is easy and meant to be meaningful. Local schools, libraries, and residents are all helping make the effort a success. Anyone who wants to take part can find details and drop-off locations on the City of Newcastle’s Facebook page.
